Why three-phase beats single-phase
If your home already has three-phase, going single-phase on solar wastes your biggest advantage. Here's what three-phase actually buys you.
Balanced across all phases
Three-phase inverters share generation evenly across L1, L2 and L3 — no voltage rise tripping the inverter offline at noon like single-phase systems often do.
Higher export limit
Energex allows 15kW export on three-phase versus only 10kW single-phase. That's an extra 25–30 kWh per day of feed-in earnings.
EV charging ready
Three-phase EV chargers deliver 11–22 kW (vs 7.4 kW single-phase). Charge a Tesla Model Y from empty to full in 4 hours instead of 9.
Premium inverter brands
Fronius (Austria), SMA (Germany) and Sungrow (China) all make true three-phase hybrid inverters with AU-based service teams.
Run heavy loads cleanly
Ducted aircon compressors, pool pumps and induction cooktops all run smoother on three-phase. Lights don't flicker when the aircon kicks in.
Future-proof for batteries
Sungrow SBR and BYD Premium HVS pair natively with three-phase hybrid inverters — no AC-coupling kludge required when you add storage later.
Watch out: "three-phase compatible" ≠ true three-phase
Some installers fit three separate single-phase inverters and call it "three-phase". This is fine for generation but you lose phase-balancing, you can't grow into a hybrid battery cleanly, and Energex treats it as three separate single-phase systems for export limits. We only quote with true three-phase inverters — Fronius Symo, SMA Tripower, Sungrow SG-RT or Fronius GEN24 Plus.
From quote to switched on in 4–6 weeks
Energex approvals take the longest — we start them the day you accept.
Phase check & quote
We confirm you have three-phase to the meter (not just to the switchboard) and design accordingly. Fixed-price quote within 48 hours.
Energex pre-approval
We submit the Connection Application on your behalf. Pre-approval for 15kW export is automatic on three-phase across most of Brisbane.
Installation (1–2 days)
Larger systems need scaffolding and a second day for the inverter & switchboard work. CEC-accredited install team only.
Inspection & commissioning
Independent QLD electrical safety inspection, monitoring app setup, customer walkthrough. You're producing power before we leave.
