Where venue power bills actually go

HVAC, gaming, cool rooms and kitchen run almost continuously across a 14-hour trading day — a near-perfect overlap with solar generation. Pubs and clubs are one of the highest self-consumption commercial sectors in Australia.

Gaming room (pokies, TAB, Keno)

EGMs run 18+ hours a day with continuous lighting, mandatory A/C (gaming rooms require dedicated climate control under QLD regs), TAB monitors and Keno screens. A 40-machine gaming room consumes 35–55 kWh/day in equipment alone, plus dedicated cooling — easily $25–$45k/yr per gaming room. Solar covers the daylight portion of this baseload completely.

Cool rooms, keg rooms, glycol systems

Walk-in cool rooms (beer, kitchen produce), keg-room refrigeration, glycol chilled-beer reticulation pumps and bottle-shop drink fridges run 24/7 at 15–60 kW continuous depending on venue size. Cool-room and glycol loads are highly predictable — perfect for solar offset, and a strong case for battery backup to protect $40k+ of cool-room stock during storm outages.

Commercial kitchen & bistro

Combi ovens, deep fryers, char grills, dishwashers, exhaust hoods and prep refrigeration. Bistro kitchens typically draw 25–80 kW during lunch and dinner service windows — both perfectly aligned with solar generation curves. Heat pump hot water can replace gas/LPG for sinks and dishwasher boost, lifting solar self-consumption further.

HVAC, function rooms, sports bars

Multi-zone ducted A/C across public bar, sports bar, gaming, bistro, function rooms and outdoor screened areas. Brisbane summer HVAC loads of 60–180 kW are common in mid-to-large venues. A/C is the largest single load category and runs hardest exactly when solar generates most — a near-perfect daytime match.

Why Brisbane venues are going solar in 2026

Four reasons publicans, club CEOs and venue ops managers across South-East Queensland are signing solar contracts this year — beyond simple bill savings.

55–70% venue power bill reduction

A typical suburban Brisbane hotel drops from $185k/yr to $65–85k/yr on a well-sized 100kW solar + 60kWh BESS. Large licensed clubs and RSLs with function space + accommodation routinely save $180–320k/yr on 200kW+ installs. Five years of compounded savings nearly always exceeds the install cost — and unlike beverage margins or gaming revenue, the saving is locked in for 25 years.

Instant Asset Write-Off + accelerated depreciation

Hotels, taverns and licensed clubs under $50M turnover deduct 100% of install cost in the year of purchase under the Instant Asset Write-Off (IAWO). Clubs registered as not-for-profit have different but generally favourable depreciation treatment via Div 40. Combined with STCs at purchase, after-tax payback typically lands at 3–4 years across most QLD venues. We provide install documentation suitable for ALH, Endeavour, Australian Venue Co, Coles Liquor and ClubsQLD finance teams.

Cool-room & cellar insurance via battery

A 6-hour storm-season blackout can spoil $40–80k of bistro produce and force a temporary venue closure (lost trade plus refund liability on bookings). A 30–60 kWh BESS configured as critical-load UPS keeps cool rooms, cellar refrigeration and gaming/POS online seamlessly through Energex outages. The avoided-product-loss case alone often justifies the battery.

ESG & corporate venue group reporting

Major pub groups (Endeavour, ALH, Australian Venue Co, Mantle, Lark Hotels) and the ClubsQLD sustainability framework increasingly require Scope 2 emissions reporting at the venue level. A 100kW+ solar install with monitoring dashboard makes annual reporting trivial — and is a genuine community-good story for member newsletters, function pitches and local council relationships.

Real example: Mid-size suburban Brisbane hotel (40 EGMs + bistro)

Real mid-size Brisbane suburban hotel — 40 EGM gaming room, 120-seat bistro, public bar, sports bar, function space and 8-room accommodation block. 100kW rooftop solar across bistro + accommodation roofs, 60kWh BESS protecting cool rooms and gaming/POS, heat pump HW replaced gas.

Don't let an installer skip the gaming-room sub-board work

The single most common pub solar mistake is treating the gaming room like any other load. EGMs require clean, stable power and clear separation from kitchen/HVAC switching transients — and your QOGR licence depends on it. A dedicated gaming sub-board with surge protection, UPS-grade conditioning and (ideally) battery backup adds $8–18k to a quote but pays for itself in EGM uptime alone. Any installer who quotes a venue solar system without addressing the gaming sub-board hasn't worked in licensed venues before — keep looking.
