Where servo power bills actually go

Fridges, food service, forecourt lighting and EV charging dominate Brisbane servo bills — and the load profile is consistent across day and night, making solar + battery one of the highest-utilisation commercial sectors.

Drink fridges, ice cream & food prep

Glass-door beverage fridges (8–24 across a typical c-store) and ice cream freezers run 24/7 at 12–30 kW continuous combined — and they're the #1 single-line bill item on most sites. Hot food cabinets, pie warmers and refrigerated sandwich prep add another 6–12 kW during trading hours. Predictable baseload — perfect for solar offset, and a strong case for battery backup to prevent $15–35k stock losses during storm outages.

Coffee, food service & QSR partner brand

Premium coffee machines (3–8 kW each, multiple units on busy sites), bean grinders, kettles, sandwich presses, Subway/Krispy Kreme/Oporto partner-brand kitchens. Food service is the highest-margin segment of modern c-store retail and runs entirely during daylight — solar covers virtually all of it. Heat pump hot water replaces gas for sinks/dishwasher and lifts solar self-consumption further.

Forecourt canopy & store lighting

Forecourt LED canopy lighting runs dusk-to-dawn (typically 8–14 hours) at 4–8 kW; pylon price signs run 24/7; internal store lighting runs 14–24 hours. Battery storage shifts daytime solar into evening canopy hours, lifting effective utilisation. AS 1158 and brand-spec lighting upgrades (Mobil, BP, 7-Eleven, EG, Ampol) are commonly bundled with solar installs.

Forecourt POS, fuel pumps & DC fast charging

Fuel-pump motors, vapour recovery, point-of-sale terminals and CCTV are modest loads individually but mandatory uptime. DC fast charging is the game-changer — adding 2–4 × 75–150 kW chargers transforms site economics. Behind-the-meter solar + battery cuts charger energy cost 30–60% and avoids costly transformer/feeder upgrades by smoothing demand to the network.

Why Brisbane fuel operators are going solar in 2026

Four reasons site operators, multi-site managers and fuel retail finance teams across South-East Queensland are signing solar contracts this year — beyond simple bill savings.

50–70% site power bill reduction

A typical Brisbane suburban servo with c-store, food service and 8 fuel positions drops from $135k/yr to $45–65k/yr on a well-sized 80kW canopy + 30kW roof solar with 40kWh BESS. Highway sites with quick-service kitchens and overnight trade often save $90–180k/yr on 150kW+ installs. The compounding effect over a 10-year site lease typically delivers 8–14× the install cost in savings.

Solar canopies = the right roof for a servo

Servos almost never have enough store-roof area for meaningful solar — but the forecourt canopy is 200–600 m² of unshaded north-facing real estate sitting unused. Purpose-built solar canopies (sometimes called solar carports) integrate solar into the canopy structure or retrofit onto existing canopies. Capital is higher than rooftop ($1.80–$2.40/W vs $1.10–$1.40/W) but utilisation is exceptional and the asset doubles as a covered EV charging area for future-proofing.

EV charging — enable it, don't fear it

Major fuel retailers (Ampol, BP Pulse, Shell Recharge, Evie, Tesla, ChargeFox) are racing to roll out DC fast charging at servos. Adding 2 × 75 kW chargers adds ~600 kWh/day of demand — solar + battery covers ~40% of that on-site, prevents costly Energex transformer upgrades, and turns a 30-minute charge session into a coffee + lunch attach-rate opportunity. We design EV-charging-ready electrical infrastructure from day one even if chargers are 12–24 months away.

IAWO + STCs + brand-program rebates

Independent operators and small chains under $50M turnover deduct 100% of install cost in year of purchase under IAWO. STCs apply on systems up to 100kW; solar canopies attract the same STC rate per panel as rooftop. Many fuel brands (Ampol, EG, BP, 7-Eleven) offer additional sustainability program rebates or co-funding for solar/EV infrastructure at sites that meet brand-spec criteria — we coordinate brand approval as part of our scope.

Don't let a generic commercial installer near your forecourt

The single most dangerous servo solar mistake is installing PV equipment, inverters or batteries inside an AS/NZS 60079 hazardous (EX) zone around fuel pumps, vent stacks or tank fills. The risk isn't theoretical — it's a vapour-ignition fire risk that voids your fuel-site licence and insurance. Insist your installer (1) has documented EX-zone training and previous fuel-site installs, (2) engages your fuel-site mechanical engineer to certify zone compliance, and (3) provides as-built EX-zone documentation with the install. Anyone who can't talk fluently about AS/NZS 60079 zoning should be nowhere near a fuel forecourt.
